The Challenge

At Elizabeth Baldelomar New Generation, we are dedicated to addressing the pressing issues faced by vulnerable and underserved communities, particularly minorities, in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Our focus spans education, public health, art, music, film, social services, sports, culture, and recreation. The challenges these communities face are extensive and require comprehensive and targeted solutions. Here’s a closer look at the issues we are committed to solving:

Educational Disparities

Access to quality education remains a significant challenge for minority communities. According to the California Department of Education, graduation rates for minority students lag behind the state average, with Latino students graduating at a rate of 82%, compared to the statewide average of 87%. Additionally, African American students face a graduation rate of 74%. These disparities reflect broader systemic inequalities that hinder academic achievement and future opportunities.

Public Health Crises

Health disparities are stark among minority populations. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights that African American and Latino communities experience higher rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Furthermore, mental health services are often underutilized in these communities due to stigma and lack of access. Only 1 in 10 Latino individuals and 1 in 5 African American individuals receive mental health treatment compared to 1 in 3 non-Hispanic whites.

Limited Access to Arts and Cultural Programs

Engagement in arts and cultural programs is crucial for personal development, yet these opportunities are often inaccessible to minority and low-income populations. Research from Americans for the Arts shows that children involved in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement. However, schools in low-income and minority-dominated areas have significantly reduced or eliminated arts programs due to budget constraints.

Economic and Entrepreneurial Barriers

Economic inequality continues to impact minority communities disproportionately. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that poverty rates for African Americans and Latinos are 21% and 19%, respectively, compared to the national average of 13%. Moreover, minority entrepreneurs often face systemic barriers, including limited access to capital, mentorship, and business networks, hindering their ability to start and sustain successful enterprises.

The Impact of Sports and Recreation

Access to sports and recreational facilities is critical for physical health, yet many minority communities lack these resources. The National Recreation and Park Association indicates that underserved areas have fewer recreational facilities, leading to higher rates of obesity and related health issues among African American and Latino populations.
